Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate ganache
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pink food coloring
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. Combine the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract in another bowl. Mix until you achieve a smooth consistency.
  4. Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined—don’t overbeat!
  5. Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with batter.
  6. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool completely on a wire rack.
  7. Create a small hole in the center of each cupcake and fill it with dark chocolate ganache.
  8. Prepare the frosting by beating the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until fluffy. Add pink food coloring to reach desired hue.
  9. Frost each cupcake with the pink buttercream and sprinkle heart-shaped decorations on top.
