Warm and gooey cinnamon rolls made from scratch for a delightful breakfast treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy and bubbly.
  2. Prepare the dough base: In a large bowl, mix together melted butter, sugar, salt, and egg until well combined.
  3. Combine ingredients for dough: Add the yeast mixture to the bowl, then gradually incorporate flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Knead the dough for about 5 minutes on a floured surface until it’s smooth and elastic.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Roll out the dough: On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Spread the filling: Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle it generously with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  8. Roll and slice: Starting from one end, roll up the dough tightly and slice it into rolls about 1-2 inches thick.
  9. Second rise: Place the sliced rolls in a greased pan, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes until they puff up.
  10. Bake the rolls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and fragrant.
  11. Make the icing: In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar with 1-2 tablespoons of milk until smooth, then drizzle over the warm cinnamon rolls.
