A delightful appetizer that offers a healthier twist on a classic with crispy, flavorful layers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauce of your choice

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing the onion. Slice off the top and peel off the outer skin.
  2. Cut the onion into petal-like shapes, being careful not to cut through the bottom.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Dip the onion into the buttermilk, ensuring each petal gets soaked.
  5. Roll the onion in the flour mixture thoroughly, allowing it to rest for a moment.
  6. Dip the onion into the buttermilk again and roll it in breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
  7. Place the onion in the air fryer and fry at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, lightly spraying it with cooking spray.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Use a large sweet onion for the best flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the air fryer.
