A delightful twist on traditional French toast, this casserole combines buttery crescent rolls with creamy cream cheese in a sweet cinnamon custard, perfect for brunch or special occasions.

  • 1 (12-14 ounce) loaf of French bread or challah
  • 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 and 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • Ground cinnamon to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Cube the bread into 1-inch cubes and layer half in the prepared baking pan.
  3. Whip the cream cheese in a mixing bowl until smooth. Add confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract.
  4. Layer dollops of the cream cheese mixture over the bread cubes.
  5. Add the remaining bread cubes over the cream cheese mixture.
  6. Whisk together the eggs, whole milk, ground cinnamon, and brown sugar until well mixed.
  7. Soak the bread with the egg mixture, ensuring all cubes are saturated.
  8. Chill the casserole covered with plastic wrap for at least 3 hours or ideally overnight.
  9. Prepare the topping by mixing brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and cold cubed butter until crumbly.
  10. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes until the top is golden brown and set.

Notes

For best results, assemble the casserole the night before and chill overnight. Serve with fresh berries and maple syrup.
