A vibrant Red Velvet Cake with rich cream cheese frosting, perfect for celebrating love on Valentine’s Day.

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • Cream cheese frosting (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder in a mixing bowl.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Frost with cream cheese frosting and decorate as desired.

Notes

Ensure eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature for the best results. If you don’t have buttermilk, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk to create a substitute.
