A classic French Onion Soup showcasing caramelized onions, hearty broth, and melted Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Baguette slices
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Sauté the onions: In a large pot, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sugar, cooking until the onions are caramelized, about 25 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  2. Combine the broth: Add the beef broth, dry white wine, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for another 30-40 minutes.
  3. Preheat the broiler: Preheat your broiler while waiting for the soup to finish cooking.
  4. Assemble and broil: Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top with baguette slices, and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese. Place under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly and golden, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Serve hot and enjoy every comforting bite.

Notes

Wait to add the cheese until you’re ready to broil to maintain the crispiness of the bread.
