A delightful Pennsylvania Dutch dessert combining rich molasses with a sweet crumbly topping.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sugar for crumble topping
  • 1/2 cup flour for crumble topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together flour and brown sugar, then cut in butter until the mixture resembles crumbs.
  3. In another bowl, combine molasses, hot water, baking soda, salt, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the molasses mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until smooth.
  5. Pour the filling into a prepared pie crust.
  6. For the topping, mix sugar and flour in a bowl, then cut in butter until crumbly, and sprinkle over the filling.
  7. Sprinkle nuts on top if desired.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until set.
  9. Let cool before serving.

Notes

Serve at room temperature or slightly warmed. Optional to add vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
