A cozy breakfast casserole inspired by the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, featuring eggs, ham, cheese, and a hint of nutmeg.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 360 ml fat-free half & half
  • 7.5 ml Dijon mustard
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 180 g stale French bread, cubed
  • 255 g diced ham
  • 180 g shredded Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).
  2. Lightly coat a 20×20 cm or 23×23 cm baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, half & half, Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  4. Add cubed stale French bread and mix gently to coat.
  5. Fold in diced ham and shredded Swiss cheese.
  6. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading evenly.
  7. Bake for approximately 40 minutes, until edges are golden and cheese is bubbling.
  8. Let cool for a few minutes, then serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, let the mixture rest before baking to allow the bread to absorb more of the egg batter.
