A hearty and sweet whole wheat bread that’s perfect for sandwiches, toast, or slathering with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water and honey; sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour and salt.
  3. Mix wet ingredients with flour: Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour; mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Shape the loaf: Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  8. Second rise: Let the loaf rise again until it reaches the top of the pan, about 30-45 minutes.
  9. Bake the bread: Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Cool before slicing: Allow bread to cool before slicing.
