  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24 tablespoons milk (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two heart-shaped cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add in eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water until well combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pans evenly.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack.
  8. For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy.
  9. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until fluffy.
  10. Add milk as needed to achieve desired frosting consistency.
  11. Frost the cooled cake generously and serve.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Leftover flavor deepens over time.
