Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Brown the Butter: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Continue cooking, swirling occasionally, until the butter turns golden brown and has a nutty aroma (about 5-7 minutes). Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Dry Ingredients for Brownie Dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup of flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream the Sugars and Butter for Brownie Dough: In a separate large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Combine the Wet Ingredients for Brownie Dough: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract into the creamed mixture. Mix until well combined.
  5. Mix the Dry Ingredients into Brownie Dough: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in half of the cooled brown butter.
  6. Prepare the Dry Ingredients for Cookie Dough: In another medium bowl, whisk together 1 1/4 cups flour, baking soda, and salt.
  7. Cream the Sugars and Butter for Cookie Dough: In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  8. Combine the Wet Ingredients for Cookie Dough: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, then gradually incorporate the dry ingredients until just combined.
  9. Fold in the Chocolate Chips: Stir in the chocolate chips.
  10. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13 inch baking pan by greasing and flouring it.
  11. Alternate the Doughs: Drop spoonfuls of the brownie dough and chocolate chip cookie dough randomly into the prepared pan, alternating between the two.
  12. Drizzle Brown Butter: Drizzle the remaining brown butter over the top of the filled pan.
  13. Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  14. Cool and Serve: Let the brookies cool in the pan before cutting them into squares.

Notes

These brookies pair beautifully with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
